Alternative approaches to grid expansion are gaining momentum

The expansion of power grids is one of the key challenges of the energy transition. At the same time, new overhead transmission lines are facing increasing public opposition in many regions.
In its June 8, 2026 edition, SRF Schweiz aktuell examined the ongoing debate surrounding grid expansion in the Reusstal region and the growing demand for alternative transmission solutions.
For Hivoduct, this discussion confirms the increasing importance of high-capacity underground transmission systems. Compressed-air cables enable high transmission performance within a compact infrastructure footprint while providing a PFAS- and SF₆-free alternative for modern medium- and high-voltage networks.
With our technology, we are working to make grid expansion more efficient, sustainable, and publicly acceptable—particularly in areas where space constraints, landscape protection, and infrastructure integration play a critical role. Our goal is to help build a modern, reliable grid infrastructure that will serve future generations for decades to come.
