The rapid progress in rocket technology is making space stations in orbit, on the Moon, and on Mars possible. Pressurized air cables can insulate with a vacuum instead of compressed air, making them optimal for space applications. Additionally, their low transport weight, robust metallic casing against radiation effects, and high rated currents to avoid heavy transformers make them ideal for such applications.

Who needs space power cables?

Space stations require a specialized island grid that, in addition to typical electrical characteristics such as operating voltage, transmission capacity, protection, and switching devices, must also meet space-specific requirements. This necessitates cable connections that fulfill these properties.

Advantages of Using Pressurized Air Cables

  • Vacuum as an Insulating Medium
The basic design of pressurized air cables can also use vacuum instead of pressurized air in the insulation gap. Vacuum is readily available in space and has no weight.

  • Lightweight Construction
Minimal transport weight is essential for space applications, as all materials must be transported via rockets. The vacuum insulation, combined with the minimalist design of pressurized air cables, minimizes weight.
  • High Transmission Capacity - MW at Low Voltage
Space stations generate power in photovoltaic systems in the megawatt range. For distribution at low voltage, cables rated for 1000 A – 5000 A are required. Pressurized air cables with vacuum insulation can be designed for such currents.
  • Integrated Grounding
The grounding is already integrated into the housing, saving space and costs without compromising safety.

  • Optimal Fire Protection & High Arc Fault Resistance
The metallic, grounded casing provides superior protection against fires and arc faults, which is crucial for survival in space stations.

  • Radiation Resistance & Durability
Background radiation in space accelerates the aging and degradation of plastics used in traditional cable insulation. Pressurized air cables consist of 99% aluminum, which remains stable in such an environment.

  • No Need for Transformers
Transformers are heavy and complex devices required to convert electrical energy between different voltage levels. If power distribution can be done at low voltage, transformers are not needed.

  • Applicable for Both DC and AC
Pressurized air cables with vacuum insulation can be designed for both DC and AC applications. Space stations will require both types of power transmission.
