Successful High-Voltage Type Tests for 170 kV Pressurized Air Cables

Hivoduct is pleased to announce that our 170 kV pressurized air cables have successfully completed the full series of high-voltage type tests. The test series included AC voltage tests at 325 kV AC with partial discharge measurements, as well as lightning impulse tests at ±750 kV, 15 impulses each, in accordance with IEC 62271-1.

All typical components of this cable series were assembled into a complete single-phase test setup for the tests. This setup included pipe conductors of various lengths, support insulators, angle pieces, an outdoor termination, bulkhead insulator, UHF PD sensor, and end termination. The boltless flange design significantly reduced assembly time in the lab, allowing us to complete all tests within a single day. All components in this series share the same flange design, making them fully interchangeable and easy to combine for customer projects.

AC Test at 325 kV
This AC voltage test far exceeds the normal operating voltage (170 kV / √3 ≈ 98 kV), confirming the excellent electrical insulation and voltage withstand capability of our cables, as well as compliance with the required safety margins defined by the standard.

This test, like the lightning impulse test, was performed at minimal operating pressure.

Lightning Impulse Test ±750 kV (15 positive / 15 negative impulses)
The lightning impulse test represents the most severe stress for high-voltage products – simulating extreme short-term overvoltages, such as those caused by lightning strikes. Our cables passed these tests without any flashovers. A subsequent AC voltage test further confirmed the integrity of the insulation after this stress.

With these successfully completed type tests for 170 kV, we are now ready to supply products for an additional voltage level. The tests also confirmed that our technology is robust, scalable, and ready to meet the demands of future energy infrastructure.

A heartfelt thank you to our dedicated team – these results are yet another testament to your excellent work and our shared commitment to reliable and sustainable energy transmission.
